I’ll never forget the day I told my boss I was quitting. I was nine years away from a full retirement. His words were supportive, but the look on his face was what I’d have expected if I’d just told him I was heading to Hollywood to be a movie star.

Or maybe like that of a parent when your kid tells you they’re not going to college because they’re starting a band.

It wouldn’t be the last time I got “the look.” After 13 years and a few promotions at a large police department, I’d get it several more times from my coworkers before I turned in my fifty(ish) pounds of gear. Cops can be blunt, so I also got a few comments along the lines of “Are you stupid or something?”

Maybe I was.

It has certainly crossed my mind. But more than feeling like I was making a foolish choice, I just felt…scared. What if I hated the new career? What if it didn’t work out and I had to come back a failure? Hell, what if it didn’t work out and I couldn’t come back? What then.

I decided to tuck away the fear and go.
