Keeping the Heart Free While Living in the World

A woman who loves and then is married off to someone other than her beloved does all the work, makes her husband and her in laws happy, and does not let them know that in her heart is her beloved from whom she is separated, her heart is always with her beloved, yet none knows. She performs her duty of being a good wife and of being a force of good. Similar should our attitude be in life, we must perform our duty, but never put our heart in this world, for it is a recipe for suffering and disaster.

Where should our heart be then? Towards God, the Beloved, for He is our Home, it is in Him that our hearts find peace, as Saint Augustine beautifully said, “Thou madest us for Thyself, and our heart is restless until it repose in Thee.” Glory be to Him, the Light Who lights whichever heart He desires. It is, of course, easier said than done.

And yet, in striving to place our hearts in Him, we discover a quiet strength within ourselves. To perform our duties faithfully, to meet life with patience, and to endure the trials that come without complaint is itself an act of devotion. Our hearts learn that the world may demand much and may offer little, yet in surrendering to the Beloved, we are never abandoned. The soul that rests in Him carries a light no darkness can dim, a peace no storm can disturb, and a joy that is neither taken nor diminished by time.

And in this understanding, we find the heart’s true rest. Not in possessions, not in fleeting attachments, but in the Beloved alone. To serve, to love, and to act with goodness, and yet keep the heart free, this is the path to peace, and this is the heart’s eternal home.
